Office
SWT Design's strong commitment to the environment and the community is evident in the recent expansion and design of their office building. Due to the firm’s growth, there was a great need for additional space and expansion of technology. Principals Ted Spaid and Jim Wolterman were committed to the expansion of their existing 1890's Queen Ann Craftsman style residence. The design direction and challenge of the addition was to preserve and enhance the existing structure while blending a modernistic design. The new building reflects the firm's values, culture, design philosophy and lifestyle.
The new addition provides an environment that fosters creativity and provides a more comfortable space for staff. The new structure also provides more efficient space resulting in continued development of high quality projects and award winning design.
The building's design is also centered on a "green" building philosophy employing the use of:
- Large window and shade structures to take advantage of natural light.
- Adaptive reuse of historic structure.
- Use of high efficiency HVAC system.
- Use of a "turf stone" paving system for parking to minimize storm water runoff.
- Collection of rainwater for watering plants.
- Use of indigenous plant material. Even though the new building will double in size, there is zero gain in imperious pavement surface.
- Use of sustainable and recycled building materials.
- Use of energy efficient lighting.
